POLICE in Mansa District have arrested four men for suspected production and being in possession of the newly introduced Zambian currency and foreign counterfeit notes.
The men were found with K59,100 and US$4,400 currency notes, as well as equipment suspected to have been used in the production of the fake notes.
The suspects are alleged to have been producing counterfeit notes which they later exchange with genuine ones.
Luapula Province police commanding officer Mwala Yuyi identified the suspects as Gerald Lwando, 26, Clever Chilambe, 30, Innocent Chomba and Sydney Mubanga, who is believed to be the mastermind.
Mr Yuyi said the suspects were found with the newly introduced K200 and K500 notes.
He said police first arrested Lwando, Chilambe and Chomba in Kunda Mfumu village in Chembe District after attempting to use the counterfeit notes at a mobile money booth.
Mr Yuyi said the suspects had hired a motorcycle from Mansa to Chembe, where they tried to pay the rider K500 by depositing the cash at a mobile money booth. But the mobile money agent noticed the fake currency and raised alarm.
“The two suspects told the rider to take them to a mobile money booth so that they could withdraw the money,” said Mr Yuyi.
“However, instead of withdrawing, they deposited a K1,000 in K200 notes in a Zamtel mobile money account belonging Gift Mwewa, and he did the transaction and gave them genuine money, and they later left the booth,” he said…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
